భారతదేశం మొత్తం భౌగోళిక ప్రాంతంలో తెలంగాణ 3.5 శాతం, జనాభాలో 2 శాతం కలిగి ఉంది, భారతదేశంలో అటు భౌగోళికంగా, ఇటు జనాభాపరంగా 12వ స్థానంలో ఉంది. భారతదేశంలో 29వ రాష్ట్రంగా కొత్తగా ఏర్పడిన తెలంగాణ సంపన్నమైన పశుసంపద వనరులను కలిగి ఉంది, ప్రత్యేకించి, దేశంలోని పశు గణంలో 5.5 శాతం పశువులు, గొర్రెలు కలిగి ఉంది. రాష్ట్రంలోని గ్రామీణ జనాభా ప్రధానంగా వ్యవసాయం మీద ఆధారపడి ఉంది, రాష్ట్రంలోని కార్మిక శక్తిలో 2/3 ప్రత్యక్షంగా వ్యవసాయం మీద ఆధారపడింది.
About 29 lakh families in Telangana are engaged in livestock sector for their livelihood. The value of livestock produce is estimated to be Rs. 12403 crores at current prices and the livestock sector contributes 4.86% to GSDP (2010-11 Third Revised Estimates).

Livestock sector is emerging as one of the potential and income-generating source to the rural community and providing full time employment in rural as well as semi-urban areas. Livestock wealth is the backbone of the rural economy. Agriculture farming taken up in smaller land holdings is becoming unproductive in recent years, due to lack of assured market/ fluctuation of prices for produce and other adverse seasonal conditions. Thus, the farmers are shifting from agriculture to Livestock farming. Availability of technology and inputs are also contributing to the shift.
The State stands 10th in Livestock population, 1st in sheep population, 12th in Goat population, 5th in Poultry, 13th in Bovine population and 17th in pig population, in the country as per the Livestock Census, 2007. With an annual output of 942 crore eggs, the Telangana stands 3rd in egg production in the country. Every eighth egg in the country comes from Telangana. With annual meat production of 4.29 lakh MTs Telangana stands 6th in the country in meat production. With an annual production of 39.51 lakh MTs of milk, Telangana occupies 13th position in the country in milk production (2012-13 approved estimates of GOI).

- To provide doorstep Artificial Insemination facility 1334 Gopalamitras (Private Inseminators) are functioning in the state under APLDA.
- In order to provide breeding facility to the breedable cattle and buffaloes of the state, Livestock Development Agency is functioning in the state
- Sheep & Goat Development Co-Operative Federation Limited is functioning to take up small ruminant development through village level 3376 sheep breeders’ co-operative societies which are functioning in (10) districts.
- There are 09 district level Animal Disease Diagnostic Labs are functioning in the state with an objective to supply necessary bacterial and viral vaccines to field veterinary institutions and also provide necessary support in disease diagnosis and disease investigation.
- 9 Dist Frozen Semen Depots are functioning in the State for distribution of breeding inputs, Frozen Semen, Liquid Nitrogen etc., to the field Veterinary Institutions functioning in the State.
- Animal Disease Check Posts (ADCP) act as barriers in controlling the unauthorized transportation of diseased animals, animals sold due to distress in adverse seasonal conditions and animals going for slaughter.
- There is one Vaccine production unit conforming to cGMP standards located in Hyderabad. They produce around 12 crore doses of bacterial and viral vaccines annually for field use.
- Existing Training Centers are imparting training to field staff and farmers in the scientific management of livestock in breeding & feeding and also disseminate the technical information collected from different national institutes of repute to field veterinary institutions for the use in the field.

FISHERIES DEPARTMENT:
Fisheries is one of the fast growing sectors contributing to GSDP of the state as well as Generating income and employment. The Sector aims at exploitation of all the possible Resources under capture and culture fishery base for increasing fish production and Productivity through sustainable development. The sector is contributing considerably for, Food security, nutrition and health, lively hood security to rural population, and welfare of fishers.
Vision :
Optimal utilization of natural resources for fish production, promote freshwater aquaculture, Supported by infrastructure and trained manpower.
Mission :
Holistic development of the sector, with focus on enhancement of productivity and production, Self-sufficiency in fish seed demand, supply of fish at an affordable price in hygienic condition and render welfare schemes to fishers.
